Brief Description: Assembling Wing Frame - stbd - wing tip
As mentioned earlier in this log my kit came with the Frise Ailerons which takes some melding of the manual in with some drawings acquired later from Progressive Aerodyne. Unfortunately the drawings are not the 'step by step' process that the manual is so I lost some time in and around manual steps 38 and 39 as I pursued the 'obsolete' path of the manual before figuring out, with the help of Glenn in Nelson and Earl at PA, what I should be doing. The drawings are not that clear either, until in hindsight of course. Basically back in Section 14 "Aileron Frames" step 1 you need to put the nutplates on the top of the Aileron Leading Edge, not the aft side as shown there for the old style ailerons. Then in Section 16 step 38 you install the Aileron Hinge Arms #5750-032 (supplied in my kit) instead of stand-offs and hinges on the Wing Spar Trailing Edge; and in step 39 you install Eyebolts AN4B-20A (not supplied by PA originally but they made good when I phoned) up into the nutplates in the Aileron Leading Edge. In Photo 1 below you can see the nutplates still installed wrongly and a too long eyebolt padded with spacers to allow the temporary installation of the Frise Aileron to the Wing Frame. This allowed me to get on with installing the Wing Tip, Right, Fiberglass and I was off to the races once again. Photo 1 shows the correct 1/8" gap called for in step 41 between the tip and the end of the aileron. The right blue line in Photo 2 iis a ratchet strap to pull the tip into place and the left blue line is masking tape used to find the drilling line for the rivets that need to go through the FRP tip into Wing Rib, Upper #10.
