Manual Reference:  Section 16
Brief Description:  Assembling Wing Frames

To assemble the two wing frames up to step 16 in Section 16 has taken me 11 hours spread over 5 days. Only 55 steps to go... Yikes!
All in all though the process has gone well and provided a sense of accomplishment. The key is to get the parts all organized beforehand, have lots of bench space to work on, read the instructions really carefully and follow them meticulously. For a work surface I am using the assembly table described in the April 4th log entry, which is barely wide enough (5'?) but the length is good (16').
Early in this Section the mounting of the Torque Tube Bearings on the Wing Compression Struts was a bit of a mystery but if you line your bearings and struts up as in my photo below you will be working with a better guide than I did.
Not funny at the time, but certainly so in hindsight, is that when I got to step 13 and strung the Cable, Trailing Edge Anti-Sweep I grabbed the end of the one for the second wing, not the first wing that I was working on. I didn't notice until I got to step 16 and tried to lift the first frame off the table and parts from the 2nd largely unassembled wing tried to come with it.
Because the frame at this point is very tight I had to undo the work back to step 13 and re-install in the exact sequence detailed in the manual to get it all to fit together.
With both frames assembled to this point I hung them on hooks on the 32 foot wide hangar wall where they just barely fit end to end.
