Brief Description:  Linseed oil protection - flying surface tubes etc

While being held up on the fuel tank installation waiting on missing parts from PA I decided to haul all the remaining tubular parts back to my apartment for the linseed oil anti-corrosion treatment. This consisted of two packages of parts indentified in the inventory lists as 'long wrap' and 'large flying surface parts'. The work here took 8 hours spread over 3 days.
As can be seen in the photos there are a lot of tubular parts to handle, literally dozens and dozens, but the process can be accomplished in fairly cramped quarters (my 2nd bdrm). Half of the cardboard 'large flying surface parts' box made a good work surface and carpet protector. However it had to be thrown out afterwards because of all the oil that soaked into it. The top half of the box survived to carry the parts back to the hangar.
My procedure was to tape up all the drilled holes on the tubes (but not the ends) with masking tape, hold a tube at an angle with the lower end in a paint tray, rotate the tube slowly while squirting a stream of boiled linseed oil using the 'mustard' bottle into the high end, wait for the oil to run out ensuring that it came out all around the lower hole perimeter, then switching the tube end for end and repeating. After a handful of tubes were done I recovered the oil in the first tray. The tubes were stood up at a steep angle in a second paint tray in the room corner. This went on for all the tubes the corner tray could hold. After a few hours the collected oil in the second tray was recovered and the tubes were all turned end for end and left to drain.
After a day or two when the oil had stopped running out of the standing tubes I peeled off the masking tape and wiped the tube exteriors with varsol using a plastic pot scrubber and paper towels to remove excess oil and tape glue. I am not too happy right now with how clean the tubes look, so will probably clean them again when they are actually assembled. Note that I have been careful to leave the parts label in place on each and every tube.
