I had looked into handling the shipping of the kit crate myself from Tavares to Mackenzie but I ended up leaving it in Michelle's capable hands at Progressive Aerodyne. She arranged it through Kim at DTS and things went smoothly from there. The factory pick-up was on 18th December and the last truck in the chain pulled onto the apron in front of my hangar 3,500 miles and 16 days later.
Fortunately the municipal snowplow was working the runway before my delivery truck arrived. Vicky, the local airport fueling agent was good enough to get on the radio and request the plow to move to the hangar apron. In a flurry of high speed runs the tonnes of freshly fallen white stuff was swept aside just in time. I didn't catch the lady at the wheel's name as she roared back out to finish the runway, but thank you my dear.
I wasn't sure how the offload was going to unfold but by way of preparation had borrowed a beam clamp and 1-1/2 tonne chainfall to sling from my mid-hangar steel joist and crossed my fingers that the delivery truck would have a hydraulic liftgate. Well the chainfall was not used as planned because the truck was too high to back into the hangar under it, but the tailgate did materialize and was a godsent. Also Gary of Bandstra Freight was my fairy godfather as he came equipped with two pallet movers, a come-along, numerous slings and a 'can do' attitude. Not to mention the help of a couple of new hangar buddies who just happened to be on the apron digging their own plane out of the snow.
Basically we did a controlled tip of the crate out the back-end using the pallet movers, the liftgate, the come-along and the chainfall to keep everything slow, safe and secure. Took about 45 minutes during my work lunchhour. Stopping at the hangar after work I pulled dozens of screws and got the lid off. With the assembly manual and parts inventory list in my cold hands for bedtime reading I called it a day.
