Brief Description:  Inspection of QB Work

This evening I got started on Chapter 28. As usual, most things look good.

I found one issue on 28-4 Step #1. The plans call for removing some of the material on the Control Column Mount. The folks at the QB factory didn't remove the material and they just bolted it up to the appropriate holes.

I believe Vans calls for the removal of this material to reduce weight. It doesn't have any affect on the structure and it probably adds some strength to be honest. My biggest concern is that I might need that removed space to mount something else, or to run cables through that area at a later time.

I'm going to call Vans just to be sure we're not going to need that space for something else later down the road.

I got as far as 28-5 Step 4. This is the step where you drill a 5/8" hole in the bottom skin for your brake lines to exit. Well I started on the hole with a unibit and as I expected I started hitting the landing gear mount before I could get the skin drilled out to size. After a little research, I found that I'm supposed to drill the landing gear mounts too (at a later point in the plans).

I really didn't have the appropriate drill bits to drill all of these holes, so I'm holding off until tomorrow. I'll run by Sears hardware and try to find the perfect bit.

So I'll pick up at 28-5 Step #4 in the morning.
