Brief Description:  Prime Skin and start riveting

Today cleaned, alodines, and primed the interior of the VS skin. Finally with the help of my mother and wife, we cleco'd it onto the skeleton.

I drove a couple of rivets into the VS and I can't tell you how disappointed I am with them. They look aweful. To make matters worse, the removal of some of these rivets enlarged the holes. of the skin and the skeleton to th point where they're even too large for oops! rivets.

I called Vans and asked for some advice. They suggested going ahead and drilling with #30's, dimpling for 1/8" flush rivets, and driving an 1/8" rivet into the hole. He said there's nothing to worry about, just make sure you get them right this time.

He also asked very interesting questions. "What type of rivet set are you using?" My reply was, "a swiveling flush rivet set."

He said, "It's not one of those with the rubber guard is it?"

Me, "Yep"

Him, "Get rid of that trash. They're junk. The rubber guards never let the rivet sit flush. That explains why your rivets look terrible."

He suggested that I get a straight 1.25" flush set and tap the rivets again. He belives they'll tap in flush. So I'll give it a shot.

He also said the swivel and rubber absorb too much energy and don't pass it on through to the rivet. All at once, it started to make some sense.

I ordered a good flush set, 1/8" pop rivet dimpler, and hopfully I'll be able to save the parts.
