Brief Description:  Dimpling and Countersinking Elevator Parts

Yesterday, along with the deburring bit I received from Cleveland tools, I also received a special dimple die for use in tight spots, like when dimpling the attachment holes on nutplates. This came in very handy for the nutplates, but I also used it to dimple the holes near the trailing edge of the elevator skins. When prepping the skins, it's advised that you put a slight bend in the trailing edges where they come together around the AEX wedges. This helps to keep the skins nice and tight against the wedge. I found that if you use a regular sized die, it tends to smush some of the slight bend out as you dimple. Once the dimples are in, it's pretty much impossible to use the roller tool on the edge for the slight bend. The small die worked perfectly and didn't even come close to smushing the bend out.
After dimpling the skins, I began countersinking and dimpling the spars to receive the skin dimples. There are a couple of areas that are so tight that a special pop rivet dimple die set has to be used. Basically, you take a nail, push it through the hole with the two die halves on the nail shank. Then, you use the pop rivet puller (I recommend a hand operated one instead of a pneumatic for this) and pull on the nail. It smashes the dies together and voila, you have dimpled in a very tight spot. Nice!
