Brief Description:  Start Sonex smoke system setup

There are two pages of photos. This is the first.

I stared working on the Sonex-supplied smoke system. I ran into issues immediately.

1. The larger of the two threaded openings in the top of the tank is much larger than the -8D fitting called for in the parts list and the installation instructions. See photo 03. The dark crescent shape at bottom of the -8D fitting is all the extra space between the -8D fitting and the threaded hole. I verified the fitting is an -8D, both in its packaging, what's stamped on its side, and in its profile (in the AC Spruce catalog). I've asked Sonex for the correct size and Jegs part number.

2. The solenoid that comes with the kit (photo 01 & 02) is different than in the instructions. It has a tremendously large wire nipple off the block box, that interferes with orienting the solenoid per the instructions. The silver body of the fitting can rotate (photo 02), so I can get it to work, but it means part of the solenoid hangs farther out into space (toward the prop) instead of remaining close to the firewall. Not sure what G-loads will do to that long moment arm.

3. The solenoid body (silver thing in photos 1 & 2) does not indicate which hole is in, and which is out. The one in the Sonex instructions clearly shows the arrow. This one shows nothing.

The silver body rotates. I "think" the hole facing out here, is the input.

Sonex either undersized the fitting, or oversized the tank hole.
