Brief Description:  Continue from previous record

I designed the engine characteristics to have good mid range torque in the 2600 to 3000 RPM range rather than for maximum peak power at 3300 max RPM. This should give superior torqe to pull a cruise pitch prop without bogging the RPM down at takeoff and climb airspeed. The 601XL isn't a speedster anyway so no need to plan for continuous max airspeed, max RPM, operation.

The Dynomation results show145 max hp at 3300 and only falling to133 hp at 2700 RPM. The average hp is 128 from 2100 to 3300 RPM. Peak torque is 259 ft lbs at 2500 RPM and averages 251 ft lbs from 2100 to 3300RPM. These numbers might seem overly optimistic, but consider that modeling the usual standard 2700 Corvair with the normally used intake, and exhaust systems, head ports, and OT-10 cam, yields 106 hp at 3300 RPM and peak torque of 174 lb ft. So, the Dynomation estimates appear to be a few percent high, but within the ballpark on a known engine

Notice from the power estimate image that the intake and exhaust system works together to give an intake positive wave simultaneously with an exhaust negative pressure wave during the valve overlap period. This helps get the intake charge moving into the cylinder for good filling. The illustration is at 3100 RPM.
