Brief Description:  First Taxi Test

Did a pre-start prep on the engine which was removal of the intake oil drain lines and closed the bleed values the lines were connected to and turned eight blades on the prop. Rolled the aircraft out of the hanger and closed the hanger door behind the aircraft. Got into the aircraft and performed the pre-start checklist. The start checklist followed. The master power switch was turned on and then the fuel pump. The oil accumulator was checked open. The primer was activated for 3 seconds and the starter was engaged of 3 blades. The ignition switches were turned on and the starter was engaged. The engine caught but died. Another 3 second prime was completed and a second attempt was made to start the engine. The starter was engaged for about seven blades without starting. A third primer period of 3 seconds was applied and the throttle was opened another 1/2 inch or so. The engine started on the second blade and the throttle was pulled back to 1000 rpm. Gages checked normal for a cold engine. Continued fast idle for a couple of minutes and then moved out onto the taxi way. Took some time to get used to steering the tail wheel and applying the heel breaks. Visibility was somewhat limited on the taxi way but not too bad. Taxied slowly to the apron and began a left turn. Felt the tail wheel go free in the turn. Attempted to straighten the aircraft but could not hold the right break enough to stop the left turn. Stopped the aircraft and asked Dean Prior to hold the tail to allow me to taxi straight ahead. That got the tail wheel back in trail and completed the taxi back to the hanger.
