Brief Description:  Elevator Cleanup, Corrision Control, Reassembly

Began and finished final reassembly of the elevator today. All the mating surfaces got a fresh coat of Cortec in the morning. By afternoon it had all dried and reassembly began.

Reassembly was an interesting challenge. Some portions of the elevator had to be pre-riveted so they could be placed inside the elevator before external riveting. The elevator channel and center ribs is one example of this, but that subassembly is pretty much like a skeleton. However, the horn doubler, a thick piece of aluminum angle connecting the upper and lower horns together, was a different story. This piece not only sticks out of the top and bottom of the elevator, but it also attaches to an internal flange. In short, there was a distinct order to the reassembly that caused me to pause and think about it a lot before popping that first external rivet!

I also drillel safety wire holes for the two hinges (elevator hinge and trim tab hinge) before riveting them onto the elevator. This was a new task for me, and seemed daunting at first blush (I don't own a drill press), but it turned out to be a pretty straightforward task.
