It was great to be back at the hangar after being out of town for a few days. My next step was to lighten the supports and rough fit the cowling.
I used the pattern I had come up with for the supprots and drilled a 1 inch hole for the scalloping. The bandsaw made quick work of the scallops. I ended up just using a file to get the edges ready. I tried the grinding wheel with little success.
The plans call for the cowling to be back from the spinner 1/4 of and inch. I figured the easiest way to accomplish this was to use a 1/4 inch piece of wood. I trimmed it for the prop extension and so I could see the sides and top of the cowling. Then, clamped it in place.
I marked a line on the top forward skin 2 inches back from the place where the cowling would fit. Put the cowling back in place and marked the cowling based on this mark.
I then used the SoniCrafter to make the cut. I actually cut it a bit too big so I would have some wiggle room. Luckily I did... when I put it in place, it was evident I would need to do some adjusting.
This process actually took most of a day. I was in no hurry to screw up the top cowling!
