Brief Description:  Upper Boot Cowling

Today I completed the modifications to my upper boot cowl. On my BD-4, I have used hinges to attach the engine cowling, and it has worked out very well. I have never liked the cost or looks of quarter-turn fasteners, so I decided to use hinges to attach the removable boot cowl top.

It took a while to work out the final geometry for the hinges because the cowling is not a simple curve, and the instrument panel and the firewall intersect it at different angles. But, I finally got it figured out and the results look good.

It is set up so the right, fore/aft hinge pin can be pulled into the cockpit with the canopy open. With this pin removed, the lower edge of the cowl will open about an inch because the two cross hinges do not extend all the way to the bottom. With the lower right edge slightly open, I can reach in an pull both cross pins, then the cowling can be pivoted up for access to the avionics tray, or the left fore/aft pin can be pulled into the cockpit, allowing the upper cowling to be completely removed.

I also prepared and temporarily mounted the wing fold tripods to the fuselage.
