Brief Description:  Canopy slide / retaining blocks

Received my new C-661 aft slide block from Vans and made a better job of drilling it this time. I think it's gonna work. The canopy frame slides much more smoothly now. All that trouble I went to locally sourcing the material and drawing up a slightly larger replacement and it turns out it was unnecessary. Ah well.

After fitting the replacement slide block I then tackled the canopy retaining blocks. Two or three weeks ago I bought some 1"x1" 2024-T3 square bar from Aircraft Spruce and drew up a design for the basic retaining block. I had given it to a local engineering shop to mill out the blocks. Well, they got most of it done but they were having trouble holding the bar to finish it off. Since they knew it was expensive, from overseas, and the only piece I had they got as far as they were comfortable with and then gave it back in one piece for me to finish off. That's ok, no drama.

Well, I got them back yesterday and tonight I shaped the ends and cut the single block in half to form my two retaining blocks. I was going to also fit them to the fuselage, but I needed to give it some more thought, planning and measuring before I proceed. The tolerances I have to play with are quite tight and I obviously want to make sure I get it right. Not only that, but I thought I had some 3/16" 4130 rod to make into pins; well, I have but not much, so I don't have any wiggle room for mistakes. I'll tackle this another time. Hopefully not in two weeks as seems to be the standard at the moment!
