Brief Description: Tom Clark fastback - canopy frame
|
|
Actually, I got my canopy frame back from Evan last week, but I simply haven't had either the time or the enthusiasm to work on the plane much recently. Not all the six hours logged for today was done today; I've 'pottered' occasionally on other days, trying to wrestle the canopy frame into shape without much success.
Frankly, I'm no master craftsman and I'm not 100% happy with the modified canopy frame. It seems to work ok, but I won't know for certain until I get the canopy on there. I'm not at all sure that is going to fit properly either. I ordered it ages ago from Todd Canopies with the assurance it would be fine for a fastback, but I'm just not sure it will be for this fastback. I guess I'll find out soon enough.
The canopy frame itself is a little wider than the fuselage and I'm going to have to take up the gap by making custom fibreglass skirts (oh, yay!). It seems that I simply can't get the frame to meet the fuselage correctly and still have sufficient clearance past the modified F-807 bulkhead upper. As it is I have only just about enough. Also, there is a very slight twist to the frame which I simply can't seem to remove; doesn't seem to matter which way I tweak it I can't get it 'just so' in all places. I've got it as close as I feel I can and will see how the canopy fits. I know one thing though; I was planning on going the standard Vans method for fixing the canopy, but I'm thinking now that the Sikaflex method might give me more leeway during fitting.
Also today, I drilled and fitted the canopy slide rails. Of course, I hadn't thought ahead when getting them anodized before, so now they are all marred and 'worked on' Ah well, I guess I'll just get them re-done when I next send anything else to be anodized.
