Brief Description:  Tom Clark fastback

Since the instructions from Vans now call to install the static air kit and then look at the top aft fuselage skin, I decided to check out the SafeAir1 static system and the Tom Clark fastback side of things.

On the static kit side of things, two things immediately became apparent: firstly, the static ports from SafeAir1 are the older flush mount style which are known to cause erroneous readings. I've emailed SafeAir1 to see whether I can obtain the newer ports which protrude slightly.

UPDATE: the static ports are *not* SafeAir1 ports, they are Evans Aviation ports. I have now purchased a pair of the SafeAir1 ports, and an alternate static air kit.

Secondly. there are no holes in the F-808 and F-807 bulkheads suitable for the snap bushings, so I will need to make some. That means I need to look at the fitting of the Tom Clark bulkheads, which is 'convenient' because I was going to look at that side of things anyway.

So out come the Tom Clark fastback 'kit' bulkhead tops and I clamp them into their respective positions. Some filing of the slots that fit around the longerons was necessary on the F-808 bulkhead top. Generally the fitment isn't too bad, though I will need to square up the existing bulkhead lowers in the fuselage as they are slightly twisted. This wouldn't have been a problem in the Vans pre-punched world as the top skin would have pulled things into correct alignment, but in the Tom Clark world things are not pre-punched. Some careful 'position and clamp' work will be needed here. The major problem is with the Tom Clark F-810 bulkhead, which is around 7/64" wider than the fuselage. Not sure what to do about that and will email Tom for some advice. If any of you reading this have some advice, hit me with it! :-)
