Brief Description:  Tom Clark fastback - top skin

Embarrassment factor is at an all time high this evening, and I wasn't sure I even wanted to post this log entry. But since some good actually came of it in the end, and to help others think twice before being as bone-headed as me I decided to post anyway.

Here's the shortened version: I purchased my new top skin, got it home, marked it out, cut it oversize with tin snips, carefully determined the position of the old skin with the holes and went ahead and drilled it. So far so good, and I'm feeling pretty good about it all. I pick the skin up to place it on the fuselage to test the fit... hmmm, seems a little heavy, and not quite so floppy. Awwww, CRAP CRAP CRAP. Yep, I went ahead and ordered, cut and drilled a sheet of .040 when I should have been using .025. Exactly how did I get it into my head that it was .040 I needed and not .025? I have no idea. So, $407 and 2 hours wasted, not to mentioned the huge embarrassment of a) having done it at all, b) admitting it to the world here c) having to phone up the supplier again and ask for another sheet. Bugger.

There are two bright sides: firstly, I decided to go ahead and cleco it to the fuselage to test the fit and I'm pleased to say I got it right. This new skin will now be the template for the 'real' one! Secondly, I now have lots of .040 in case anyone locally needs any! Actually, not sure that last one is really a bright side, but I need to console myself somehow :-( Ah, what the hell, its only time and money, right?! I was doing so well, too...
