Brief Description:  Rivet bottom skin & bulkheads

When I got home from skydiving today Jackie and I went out and finished riveting the F-842 bottom skin to the F-809 and F-810 bulkheads. That went relatively smoothly but then we noticed that we hadn't done the row of 5 AN426-AD4-4 rivets at the forward end of the mid-longerons. Well, that was where our troubles started! Firstly, 4-4's are too short, but then -5's are too long. We chose to back-rivet these and the -5's set ok if you were careful. What was a bear, though, and took several attempts on both sides was the forward most rivet where the skins come to a 3-way corner. Due to the surrounding skins you can't get a mushroom set cleanly on the outside. and the back-rivet set won't seat squarely on the inside which causes the rivet to tip. After several drill outs I had one last chance on each side using a slightly pre-squeezed -5 rivet. One more drill out and I was certain the hole sould be beyond repair and a bolt or something would be going in there. Yuck! Anyway, my solution was to use the back-rivet set on the *outside*. That is, on the manufactured head of the rivet and buck as normal. It required Jackie on the gun to make sure she was absolutely square on and didn't jump, slide or move, but we pulled it off and the rivets set ok. Not great, but ok. Job done, and when my Sister's guy comes back from fishing tomorrow we'll flip the fuse over, sit it on its temporary undercarriage and carry on. Well, carry on the week after that is, I have an exam next Friday so there won't be any construction next week... probably... maybe ;-)
