Brief Description:  Left wing tip

Got plenty done again today. First thing I did was place the tip rib into the wing tip and mark where it went. Then I removed the tip from the wing and drilled the tip in place. Unlike the right wing, this time I set the tip rib back from the edge quite a way so it doesn't interfere with the reinforcing strips or the skin attach holes. On the right wing I followed the plans and aligned the rib flange edge with the edge of the fibreglass tip and the end result was a lot of messing around with additional glass cloth layers to fix the different levels and the edge distance. This time I don't have that problem and have a much cleaner installation. I don't think it will matter too much having the edges not aligned. Besides, I may yet fill in the cavity made by the tip rib as some other builders have done. With the tip rib cleco'd I clamped the reinforcing strips in place and match drilled through the #40 holes in the fibreglass. Then I used tape to hold the strips in place, re-installed the tip to the wing and drilled through all skin attach holes with a #27 drill for the #6 screws. I also took the opportunity to trim the trailing edge to align with the aileron. While the tip was on the wing, I worked on the light mount (see next post). I then removed the tip from the wing and drilled the tip and the reinforcing strips for #6 nutplates using the jig that Avery FedEx'd to me a couple of days before Christmas. Much easier than last time when I had to do multiple fittings and drillings. Part way through, Jackie came home early from work, so I did the only logical thing: sent her back to work; edge-finishing the reinforcing strips and deburring the tip rib!
