Brief Description:  Aileron c/w, deburring, etc

I wanted to tackle the aileron counterwight tonight: I was just a little concerned about the countersinking and then the dimpling of the aileron leading edge skin. As it turned out, it was no problem. First I cut a v-groove down a piece of 4x2 wood and clamped this on the table of my drill press so that the groove was aligned with the drill. Then a countersink cage in the press and simply line it up by hand. When I worked towards the end of the pipe, Jackie supported the other end for me. To dimple the aileron leading edge skin we cleco'd the assembly together and supported it on a couple of long pieces of wood to keep the skin away from the bench top. Jackie held it down tightly while I created the dimple using a 1/8" male dimple die in the mandrel of the Avery C-frame. The male dimple die goes straight into the counterweight using the countersunk hole as the female die. Worked out ok, though each dimple has a little ridge to each side since the countersunk hole is kind of oval (it being in a round pipe). I'll rub those smooth with some 600 grit before I rivet. Next Jackie and I started on the deburring, edge-finishing and dimpling of the aileron/flap braces and hinge brackets. Jackie did the brackets (minus, of course, the bit that I screwed up last night!), while I did the aileron brace and then dimpled the top wing skin. A new W-414C-R was despatched FedEx from Vans this morning and I don't think it will arrive before the weekend, but I want us to try to get all this stuff ready for priming, just in case it does. More of the same tomorrow night then. Yay! :-|
