Jeff & Jackie's RV-8 Project

Date:  7-11-2006
Number of Hours:  3.25
Manual Reference:  7-3
Brief Description:  Wing skeleton

Jackie came out and helped me finish riveting the remaining main ribs to the main spar, which for some reason went slower than last night. Then she popped out to the shops while I deburred the rear spar and threw some rattle can primer onto some small rubs where the epoxy primer had been removed. After I let the rattle can dry for half hour or so, I assembled the rear spar to the rest of the skeleton with cleco's. I then went ahead and started squeezing the rear spar/rib rivets. Jackie came back part way through and came out and helped by removing cleco's and inserting rivets as needed. We had to drill out three because a) we put on in that was too short (forgot about the reinforcing fork!), b) Jackie found one in the root doublers that shouldn't have been there at all (Thank God for that; it would have been a real arse to get to later once the skins were on and I discovered my mistake!), and finally c) I used a -4 on the aileron doubler when it should have been a -5. No matter, though, the skeleton is now done and has been moved onto the jig. I need to drill a couple of holes in the mounting angle at the root rib (since it is now the other way round to the last wing so the existing holes don't line up) and then get the thing levelled, aligned and clamped down. I'll drill the holes tomorrow night, but I won't bother getting it all aligned until after the SAA meeting on Sunday (when teh local chapter boys are coming round to see everything). The remaining nights of this week will be spent cleaning and tidying the workshop, though we may make a brave attempt to edge finish and flute the leading edge ribs. Probably until next week though... c ya!! :-)
