Brief Description:  Canopy skirts

So I didn't spend much time in the shop. Enthusiasm is low, its cold and wet, I have a lot of other things going on right now that are taking up metal capacity and I *hate* fibreglass. Nonetheless, I made a start and I'll try to do a bit each evening or something. Its a 3-step process:-

  1. Cover up all the gaps & build out with micro to form a plug.

  2. Layup glass cloth as necessary, re-inforced with wood, to make a single piece mold.

  3. Remove mould from plane, gelcoat and layup the final product.

Yep, its gonna take some time, but there you go. The better I make the mold, the better the final product will be. Of course, I have my trip to the UK coming up in about 8 weeks, so that will throw some delay in there too.

Here you can see where I have started to make the plu. That is, the shape that I want the final canopy skirt to be. I cut down the supplied skirt to cover up the exposed area of the canopy frame between the canopy itself and the fuselage. There is still a bit of shaping to do, but I need to get some adhesive to fix it to the canopy frame while I build out. I have also cut a piece of .025 and taped to the aft fuselage so I can sand right down into it without damaging the real skin. I have yet to start the right-hand side. Once I have this all in place, and aluminium foil tape covering any gaps I shall build it up with progressive layers of expoxy/micro mix, sanding and shaping until I have the shape I want for the skirts. I need to make this plug as good as possible since it will reflect the final product.
