Brief Description:  Priming Horizontal Stabalizer Pieces

Frustrating times. Doing my best to prime pieces and parts from the Horizontal Stabalizer, but the cold weather is getting the best of me. First tried the Sherwin Williams P60G2. No luck whatsoever. Not sure if I didn't prep properly, or if it was just too cold for the stuff to work. Outside temp around 15 degrees, but I had the torpedo heater trying to keep things tolerable. Probably still too cold.

I then tried a can of Zinc Chromate that I've had sitting on the shelf forever. Seemed to work fine, so I'm proceeding in that direction. Can't say that I like the rough feel of the parts once the ZC has dried, but it sure does feel like they'll last forever. Having been through two submarine overhauls, I've seen Zinc Chromate used for just about everything possible. If it works for the Navy, then it's probably good enough for an RV.

Without a store close by to purchase more Chromate, I went to Napa and picked up two cans of 7220. Will give it a try next week. I do like the gray color better, and given a top coat of a gloss enamel it might look pretty good. Being self-etching, I expect th adhesion to be better than Zinc Chromate, but we'll see. Currently wondering if having two pieces primed with different products in contact with each other might set up some kind of reaction. Kinda like dissimilar metals. Guess I can always call Aircraft Spruce and order some more Chromate.

It appears that surface prep is King! This might be why my Sherwin Williams paint didn't look very good. I'm waiting for work to slow down a bit so I can try again. Ideally that's the way I'd like to go. So far the paint booth is working out very well! I might build a paint storage locker in the booth, and maybe another shelft to expand the parts laydown area. Can't wait for the weather to warm up so that I can open the hangar door and not have to worry about fumes.
