Brief Description:  Main Wing Spar

Ugh, bummer day. The last rivet on the left main spar, we messed up. Photo 1 shows where it is – near the root end, almost in the center of the spar and rear doubler. I pulled the trigger before Ruth had the bucking bar firmly on the rivet. The shop head canted down severely, and pushed the spar/doubler metal back to where it left a small smile in the front. I drilled the rivet out, sanded both sides smooth. Then we put another rivet in with proseal, and set it. Major mistake. Because the area wasn’t perfectly flat due to sanding, and we had proseal on the end of the rivet, the same thing happened again only worse. See photo two the mfg head side. After consulting with my tech advisors, we decided not to do anything with it this time, but use an Avex 3/16 pulled rivet to not stress it too much more -- lot's of proseal.

Prior to that, I spent the day completing work on the other main spar, completing the priming. Photo 3 shows it in the jig and the first bunch of rivets set -- no problem. We'll complete it today.

Lessons learned, don't drill out rivets for the occasional smile or bent tail -- material is more important than a good looking rivet. Second, make sure the tails are clean of proseal where they meet the bucking bar -- you'll get a better set. Other than that, things are going really well. Ruth is very good at bucking now. Just bummed because of my first really major stupid mistake.
