Brief Description:  Elevator

After completing the wing spar, I cleaned up the work area and then put the elevator back on the work table. I needed to go back and replace the bolts holding the counterweights. I swapped them out, torqued, and added torque seal. I then closed up the counterweight space and riveted the skin on. The only problem I had was the fit of the center rivet -- it bumped into the counterweight. I used a #30 drill and drilled through the rivet hole and slightly into the counterweight, allowing space for the rivet to completely seat.

Next, I went back to the area around the elevator horn. Darryl Murphy recommended I add the square tube and strap from top to bottom, similar to the current Moose design. I had already built the elevator with the earlier SR 2500 mod, which added horn doublers to the inside of the horn. I removed them, and layed out the new ones, will cut tomorrow. I have the material for the tube and strap and will complete tomorrow.

In addition, I had some concern regarding the width of the v on the elevator. Evidently, on earlier kits, the spacing up front was not wide enough to accept the rudder fin pass through. I called Charlie Starr and he measured his SR 2500. His V up front was 3 1/8 inches wide and at the back it was 14 5/8 inches wide. That is the same as mine so they apparently made a change to the kit at some point in time. The newer Moose kits are even wider, almost 1/2 inch on each side.
