Brief Description:  Fabricating Wing Struts

Today, I worked to fabricate the wing struts. First, I set the dihedral on the wing. I used my laser level focused out from the top of the fuselage to the wing tip. When I got it close, Charlie Eubanks came over and helped to double check everything. We made a 25 ft long water level with a little dish soap to reduce surface tension and food coloring to make it easier to see. Turned out my laser level had it perfect. I then followed the procedure in the manual to make the wing struts. The only surprise was that the two fittings didn't line up toward each other. The top fitting in photo one was off by 2 degrees and the lower fitting off by 3.5 degrees. That just left enougn edge material to be comfortable. I took the 1.5 square tubing over to Charlies and we machined the fork in each end. I'm happy I did that, it would have been very time consuming to do it by hand, but if I had to I would cut it close on a band saw and then sand with a disk to level.
