Brief Description:  Riveting close to skin joints

I read that some people have had problems flush riveting next to joints. I experiemented with some scrap then found the following works well.

Image 1- the red dot indicates the location of a rivet too close to the fairlead fairing to buck. I took some scrap skin the same thickness as the adjacent joint (fairing) and after deburing used as a shim. Taped in position and bucked with the flush set centred over the rivet. It came out perfectly flush.

Image 2 - red circle is bucked rivet. I then repositioned the shim to allow the flush set to stay flat over the top two rivets on the fairing. However, as the flush set was so close to the fairing bulge these rivets were not quite flush. So I changed the flush set for the back rivet set (centred over rivet) and gave a VERY SHORT blast and the rivets became flush.

Try with some scrap first before trying this method.
