Brief Description:  Oil Cooler 1 - Hole Cut Out and Shutter Holes

As mentioned earlier it is imperative that you do not fit the oil cooler until the baffles are trimmed to the desired top cowl clearance (1/2"). On the 8 the oil cooler will sit quite low.

HOLE CUT OUT

Used the steel rule/tape hinge trick to get neat straight edges.

VAN's SHUTTER - #12 HOLES

When I initially looked at the shutter/FF-709/Standard Vans Oil Cooler I noted:

* The #12 holes in F-709 doubler line up in the middle of the oval holes in the cooler - good
* The centreline of the shutter spacer lines up with the outer section of the oval holes in the cooler - good
* The centreline of the shutter spacer does not line up with #12 holes in FF-709 - not good

Essentially the shutter is the same width of the cooler but FF-709 is wider than the cooler so if I was to match drill #12 holes in the shutter I would get so close to the louvers that I think (almost certain) they would bind when the bolts are tightened.

INITIAL THOUGHTS - I have seen guys mount them on the rear and whilst they are not quite as efficient I think by sealing it well with high temp rtv I will have a much stronger/secure solution by having holes in the centre of the shutter spacer. At least having it at the rear will be better than not at all.

I then contacted my test pilot to be (Andy) and he suggested to perservere with the fit and not worry about edge distance.

Thankfully I have a full set of imperial drills so I was able to step up gradually to #12 (and slightly beyond) to allow a fit to the FF-709/Oil Cooler and not drill into the louvre. As you can see from the photo I did it but boy was it tight! At least the shutter will be in front of the cooler and be more efficient.

Had to trim the outboard corner and reduce the control horn to fit with the baffle.
