Brief Description: Haverfordwest Air Race 2015 - 1
This weekend was going to be a special one as watching an air race at Haverfordwest in 2004 triggered in me the interest to have a go at racing. In the autumn of 2014 I approached the RRRs to request a race at Haverfordwest and that I would be the liaison. They kindly agreed. There was a bit of self interest as it would mean reduced fuel bills and no accommodation costs!
I also asked if we could compete for the Ginger Lacey Trophy as a spotty 17 year old Air Cadet returning from completing a Flying Scolarship I flew with Ginger as he was my Chief Flying Instructor at my local club in Bridlington, East Yorkshire. Ginger is a hero in the RAF - he was the top scoring Fighter Pilot during the Battle of Britain, shot down the Heinkel HE-111 that bombed Buckingham Palace, he was shot down/force landed 9 times, flew the first Spitfire over Japan and was a technical advisor to the wonderful 1969 film The Battle of Britain.
Ginger also served with my half Uncle, Alan Catlow, on Vampires after the war - see the log entry of when I visited Alan shortly after JBTR first flew.
