Brief Description:  Guernsey

We had a lovely 2 night spring break to the island of Guernsey. It included a ferry to Herm Island where there are no cars but a hotel and two pubs - our sort of idyllic retreat! Think we'll be back.

Travelled round the immaculately kept island on a bus and stopped at the wonderful German Occupation Museum to see how Britain could have become if we lost the war. Weird to see a photo of a German army band marching passed Lloyds Bank over 70 years ago.

There is a monument to mark Liberation day and it was opened by Prince Charles (I suspect he would have approved of this thoughtful and ingenious tribute).

The monument is precisely placed to mark the path of the Sun on the 9th May each year. The tip of the shadow of the 5-metre high obelisk falls on a curve of stone seating throughout the day marking out inscriptions of events which happened on Liberation Day 1945 at the spot where islanders greeted the liberators.

The obelisk is made up of 50 layers of Guernsey granite - one layer for each year of freedom. The top layers are sheared away to represent the five years of occupation endured by islanders.

The trip was capped off by two of the best meals we've ever eaten.
