The next step was to file indents into the base tube to accept the protruding rods so as to prevent rotation. A short length of tubing was cut to act a as the collar for the cap. When the cap is tightened down. the stick is secure to the base with no wiggling. A few turns, and the stick is free to come off. I'll paint the stick later. Works pretty well.
