Brief Description:  Preparing Skyview Network Junctions

The Skyview Network in N915JK will interconnect 8 separate devices. Dynon sells prefabricated Y cables to branch the network from one connection to two. These cables are fairly expensive and introduce three addtional mechanical connection points for each Y junction. In order to connect 8 devices, I would need 6 Y junctions resulting in 18 additional connectors in the plane. I decided to hadrwire the junctions into the network. This means making a three wire splice nine times for each of 6 junctions. This is a lot of work, but I feel it will be more reliable and a lot less costly. I made a first attempt at making splices that would fit inside a DB-9 connector housing. There just wasn't enought room for all the wires and insulation inside the housing. So I decided that the junctions had to be made along the cable length. This next set of activities shows the steps that I followed to make these juntions. The first step is to strip 3/4" of insulation from the 3 wires to be joined. I then unwrap to strands and cut the rest of the wires to 1/4". The long strands will be used to wrap the junction to provide addtional mechanical strength. I tin the 1/4" strands together. I then secure the three wires in a little jig with clamps to hold the wires in place during soldering. I wrap the 6 long strands around the wires and solder the junction.
