Brief Description: Wings: Hanging of the Wings 3/3
Hanging of the Wings (cntd.)
Following a final inspection of the completed wing holes, we found that the port wing rear attachment had excessive play and on closer inspection found that the 5/16 hole in the rearspar was slightly elongated (ovalisation of 1mm), This may have happened most likely during the final reaming process (angled reaming).
After consultation with Bob Barrows it was decided to sleeve the spar hole with a 3/8" x 0.028 4130 pipe section, rather than opening up the whole attachment to 3/8". The preparation included making up a drill jig and appropriate shims to allow the clamping of the jigt to ensure that the whole would be perpendicular to the spar.
With the wing removed from the fuselage, the hole was progressively opened up to 3/8', followed by the fitting of the sleeve.
After completing this work, the wing angle and play was again checked and found to be perfect.
