A hot and sunny day for priming work - but the threat of thunderstorms later may make life interesting.
There's a big pile of prepared bits to prime, together with those spar stubs. I'll also need to try to prime the rear wing spars, all 12 foot of them. The main spars were anodised at the factory so don't need to be primed.
Picture 1 is all I have to show for a long priming session. I had to cut holes in both sides of my spray booth so that I could slide the long spars through, while supporting each end on a sawhorse. I had to spray these in three sections. The thunderstorm arrived in the middle of this, just when I needed to poke the end of the spars outside. Sandra's poor old hairdryer worked overtime. I don't dare put it on maximum heat as it keeps cutting out. A noisy afternoon's work what with the hairdryer, the forced air compressor for my mask, and the paint compressor joining in intermittently. No complaints from the neighbours, fortunately. Worryingly, most of my first tin of primer has gone. This was heavy, so much of that weight will have been added to the plane :-(
Priming done, I can crack on with some spar assembly work. Picure 2 shows Attach Angles being riveted to both sides of the outboud ends of the main spar. These are for attaching nose and main ribs.
The main spar arrives with all of the big rivets installed (so that we don't need fancy equipment), but the spar is, in fact, incomplete. There's quite a lot of pop rivets to be installed to secure everything. See picture 3. What's not clear from the picture is the spar is basically a length of U-channel. At the tip, it has lightening holes. As you get closer to the root it has increasing layers of doublers, making the unit thicker and thicker as you travel towards the fuselage. These doublers are what need to be secured with the additional rivets.
