Brief Description:  Test harness for the Dynon

Couldn't raise the enthusiasm for working in a cold garage today, so found a piece of work that I could do in the kitchen. I had previously bought female 9-pin and 25-pin D-subs, an in-line fuse holder, some bell wire, and solder in Maplins, so I was all set to build a test harness for the Dynon.

I found an excellent primer on soldering D-subs (Bob Nuckolls) and set to in comfort. Just two cables are required for providing power and ground for the Dynon, and a further three cables to provide TX, RX, and ground for a link to a laptop. I put a 3-amp fuse in the holder, although the Dynon should not draw more than 1.5 amps.

With some trepidation I fired up the 12-volt supply and the Dynon burst into life. Picture 1. The Dynon provided seven warnings, to be acknowledged - e.g. no compass, absent fuel pressure etc. I also noted that it clicks intermittently - apparently this is normal.

Picture 2 shows the laptop connected. I can now prepare checklists on the PC and download them to the Dynon. This all works too.

Picture 3 shows set up screens as you go into the PC software. There are copious warnings about flat battery on the PC while updating the Dynon. Do this wrong, and you end up shipping the unit back to the factory. You have been warned!
