Brief Description:  Canopy sanding

With the compressor "gone tech" I reverted to more work on the canopy. I was not happy with the clearance at the leading edge of the canopy. Although the gap is 1/8 inch as per the plans, when you lift the canopy some 4 inches, it all but touches the instrument panel cover. As this area gets covered with a fibreglass fairing, I don't see why the gap cannot be bigger that 1/8 inch. Other web posters concur, so it's off with the canopy, and get sanding. With no compressor, I was reduced to elbow grease and 80 grit sandpaper to remove the material. Quite hard work, though subsequent polishing down to 400 grit was easier.

I also noticed I had forgotten to smooth the edges of the of rear window, so that came off too (numerous screws), and these edges were also polished. The web site has a worrying topic about this rear window. The material was selected so that it can be bent to shape. However, it is adjacent to the fuel filler cap, and a couple of other folk had spilt fuel onto the window, and it had crazed. It appears that the material doesn't like fuel. Seems a poor choice of material, so close to the fuel filller.

Keith came round late afternoon, and removed the regulator and pressure sensor from the compressor. He and Tim are off to Machine Mart tonight to see if they can cobble up a fix for me.
