Brief Description:  Drilling the canopy front and rear

Today was the first nerve-wracking session on the canopy. I fired up the space heater, and did not start until the temperature had reached 60 F.

Step 1 on Page 34-05 explains how to find the tangent line where the canopy meets the forward bow on the frame, by pressing down on a piece of tape sandwiched between the two components. This worked moderately well for me, though others had difficulty here. The centre section was not visible on the tape because the weld line (although ground down) was not quite flush with the rest of the tube. The contact line also became indistinct at the edges. In retrospect, I could have done this better, as a couple of subsequent holes at the left and right edges are maybe 1/8 inch off.

Anyway, no obvious drilling problems as I match drilled into holes previously made in the front bow, and present in the rear bow. I used a high drill speed, and light pressure as instructed. By the time I was done the temperature had risen to 77 degrees F. On inspection afterwards, I discovered the 1/8 inch gap at the front had somewhat closed up, the sides had pulled down and were now too long again, and a gap had opened up between the read edge and the Aft Window. I had followed instructions to loosen the clamps holding the rear bow to the roll-over bar, so I am not sure what happened. I can obviously remove excess material from the front and sides, but I don't know whether the gap at the rear will be a problem. Too late to undrill the holes though.
