Brief Description: Prepare the main wheels
Today I dug out all of parts for the undercarriage. First job was to split the nosewheel to install the tyre and tube. I have a small mountain of Allen keys, but none of them fitted the wheel. A trip to the local garage also drew a blank, so yet another task to be deferred until I can find a suitable tool.
And so to the main wheels, which required two different Allen keys. Fortunately this time, I had a suitable keys. I'm embarrassed to say how long it took me to disassemble and reassemble the first wheel. I'm not a natural grease-monkey. Speaking of grease, the tapered roller bearings need to be cleaned of oil, and greased with high-temperature grease. I called Tim for advice on how to do this, then orded some Aeroshell 5 grease. I was going to get the Aeroshell 22, as recommened in the Matco instructions, but could not find a source for less that 3 kilos, or 30 tubes of the stuff. LAS do a single tube of No 5, but wanted to charge me £8 for postage. So I ordered some T-pieces for the static air instruments, a couple of replacement bolts for the flaperons, and 5 litres of Shell oil for the Rotax, just to make the postage cost worthwhile.
Learning curve climbed, I managed to do the second wheel much more quickly. Just need to grease the bearings when the grease arrives... Still not certain I got the nut on the tube valve in the right place. Also need to torque the nuts.
