Brief Description:  Prepare forward fuselage components

I have been a bit delinquent in my photos lately. After compoleting the fuselage bottom skin, I turned my attention to the forward fuselage assembly. Sandra had accidentally locked me out of the house before she went to work, so I had no excuse to stop work. And I found a little food in the beer fridge in the garage so no big deal.

Anyway, I'm now well and truly into Section 22. Many noters on the internet had commented that this section was difficult, though it did not look it from the pictures. As I worked my way through I, too, found that the text is rather inadequate. In fact it seemed to have been written by someone else!

I strongly recommend clecoing things together before doing anything drastic to ensure you understand what is required. Of course I did not, and regretted it. I managed to countersink a hole from the wrong side in the Cooler Stiffener. There seemed no alternative to ordering a replacement part from Van's so that was my last task today.

Having said that, you can see my progress in Pictures 1 and 2. Nothing primed or riveted yet, but things are coming together OK. It's not easy to see from the picture but the firewall is a Z shape, in 3 sections. You can see the bottom firewall, and just about see the horizontal firewall "shelf" above it. The top section comes later.

There's much internet discussion about enlarging a small hole in the firewall to 9/16ths with a unibit. The flange of one of the uprights is partially obscuring where the hole will be, so you have to drill into this also. It's very easy for the drill to skid to the side. In fact my hole is slightly off centre. Enough for me to dig out the gascolator and trial fit it. In the event, I needed to file the hole slightly to ensure everything fitted. I'll need to check with Tim, but I think this is OK. However, I'm not keen on enlarging any hole in the firewall, because it will need to be sealed with something. Those smarter than me will no doubt get the gascolator out early to see how everything fits.
