Brief Description:  Control Column and Step Ribs

Not specifically shown here is the riveting of the Seat Ramp Floors, left and right, which add rigidity to the seat area. You can just see these in Picture 2. There's still a gap between the seats which I guess will allow plumbing work to proceed later.

Picture 1 shows the Control Column in place. The plans call for the holes to be cleared of powder coating by final drilling the holes. Easier said than done, as it is not easy to get a drill bit perpendicular to some of the holes. I guess we don't need elongated holes in this part!

The column is bolted through the bearings to the support assemblies on the aft face of the seat bulkhead. This is a real fiddle as pairs of washers have to be inserted either side of the bearing. I found the easiest way was to set up the structure vertically so the bolts are vertical (and not horizontal) and I stuck the pairs of washers together with tiny amounts of Bostic Quick Stick (basically paper glue). Some folk have used superglue. This piece of work eventually took a couple of hours, but I was happy with the result. The column moves freely with no lateral play.

Picture 2 shows the assembly growing forwards with the addition of Step Ribs riveted on, and a step bulhead clecoed onto these ribs. This structure will support the steps that our intrepid aviators will use to mount the wing and hence get into the cockpit. Page 21-14 Steps 4-6.

Picture 3 is Page 21-14 Step 7. This is a "reward" step. I get to push a whole bunch of snap bushings (grommets) into various holes in the fuselage structure. They all fit perfectly, look neat and tidy, and take one second each to install! Retrospective Note: I had to remove some of them to install the fuel lines!
