Brief Description:  Preparing wing ribs

I note from the layer of dust on the wing ribs that I last touched them in November 2008. Lots of really tedious work ahead before I can attach them to the spars (not to mention priming!).

Each rib needs some additional work on the scotchbrite wheel, and the rivet holes need to be deburred. But there's also some adjustment to be made to the majority of the ribs.

Picture 1 shows a scribe line where the "tab" on this rib needs to be removed. Many ribs need this treatment. I tried using tin snips on the first example, but these mangled the rib unnecessarily. Second attempt was with an aluminium blade in my jig saw. Much more successful, provided the cutting end is well clamped between two pieces of wood.

Picture 2 shows two nose ribs. The bottom one has had the rear end trimmed (as per Picture 1). The top one has the rear tab in place but has the top and bottom tab at the front removed. Other combinations include none or both of these changes. Additionally, some of the nose ribs need nutplates to be riveted on (after priming). This means dimpling and drilling to size for these ribs (not pictured). 5-15 minutes work per rib, and there are more than 50 of 'em. It has been cold and pouring with rain for most of the day, so couldn't have picked a better time really.

Picture 3 has two variations. Vanilla (bottom), and trimmed at the front (top). Again different combinations apply. After 7.5 hours I had done three quarters of the ribs. Another 2-3 hours to go. But not today.

I had organised a "mystery flyout" tomorrow, but the weather doesn't look promising, so I may get some time to finish this - but somehow I doubt it. Cannot complain, I have done 43.5 hours this week.
