Brief Description:  Second attempt to rivet a rudder rib

With my inspector away in Australia, the project was in danger of stalling, so I arranged to drive down to Midlem (Selkirk) to visit Robin (another inspector and RV-6/RV-7 repeat offender) to get the replacement rudder rib fitted, and install an oversize rivet in the tailcone rear bulkhead.

Interesting couple of hours exploring different techniques for resolving problems. The rib attachment to the rudder is not pretty, but safe, and allowed me to see demonstrations of use of a rivet gun, "straighening" rivet shop heads that have gone skewiff, flattening domed rivet heads etc.

The two pictures show the result from both sides.

The primary reason for the visit, was to install an oversize rivet in the bulkhead. This was accomplished by drilling out the hole, then using a C-clamp and a 4-pound hammer to set an oversize rivet. Seemed a bit drastic, but the outcome was fine. You can see the rivet in a later picture.

Robin also measued some of my squeezed rivets that seemed a shade undersize. I went home and resqueezed the rivets. This was 95% good news, but I managed to mash one of my previously good rivets. However, I was able to use my new-found skills to drill out this rivet and replace it, without further ado.
