Brief Description:  Ribs, skins, and hinges

The noses of the ribs need to be radiused to prevent interference with the skins (I assume).

Also did P09-07 Steps 3-5. This is preparation of the other half of the piano hinges which attach to the tailplane, and eventually join the ASTs to the tailplane. Same type of work as for the ASTs using a template to drill holes. You need to be careful that the template is the right way up (notched edges down this time, as per plans).

There are a couple of holes that are not drilled, as the plans call for masking tape to be put where holes should not be drilled. Guess who drilled through the masking tape on the first hole! As it happens I could switch the two parts around as the second part has masking tape in different locations. Lucky, for once.

Further preparation, P09-08 Step 3, involved temporarily fixing the piano hinges to the tailplane skins, so that holes can be drilled where the masking tape had been placed. All cunning stuff - and no pictures to explain. *** I subsequently found that I had done this wrong! It is essential to cleco the hinges to the bottow row of holes on the aft flange of the tailplane skin. The top holes are not identical. Requires further research. ***

Next P09-09 Step 6. This separates two "aft skins" that fit on the the extremities of the tailplane.

Finally, I spent ages trimming the blue plastic from the rivet holes on the two large tailplane skins which will eventually conceal all of my shoddy work (just kidding)!
