Brief Description:  First squeezed rivets

As instructed by my inspector, I had purchased a couple of tubes of JC5A jointing compound. This is sticky yellow stuff that goes in between all mating parts as a corrosion inhibitor. The stuff is bright yellow, very sticky, doesn't dry, and gets onto everything.

My first rivets were big round-headed squeezed jobs. Unfortunantely, in my enthusiasm I started on this before the primer had had time to harden, so I ended up scratching the stuff off. Will need to be touched-up later. I was pleased that the two bearings that are sandwiched between two thick aluminium plates rotated freely after the riveting was done.

The first 10 rivets were not wholly successful. I managed to put a "smiley" on the shop head of one of these. I don't know if this matters, but I elected to drill it out, at which point I discovered how difficult it is to ensure that the drill is truly centred on the rivet. I was not too proud of the replacement, but I'm learning. These parts are secured with honking great rivets, so should be well and truly secure - no bad thing as the rudder is mounted on these.

Here's a VAF link which references potential problems with riveting the hinge brackets.
