Brief Description:  Fit and test the stabilitor trim

Finally, I got around to installing the trim motor with the tail. I installed the stabilitor first, which was probably a mistake. It's maybe easier to install the tail fin and rudder first.

I didn't find it easy to install the trimmer assembly. It's quite tricky getting in the bolt that links the trim motor and its mount to the aft bulkhead. Needs to be done lying down and working upwards. Probably made more difficult by the temporary bits of coathanger that are in the way. These are stopping the rudder cables and stabilitor cables from disappearing back into the tailcone.

Anyway, Picture 1 shows the stabilitor and the trim unit in place. Picture 2 shows the assembly bolted to the aft bulkhead.

I was nervous of applying spade connectors to the trim unit as the five wires are so thin, but in the event it seemed to go OK. I'll just need to be careful not to pull the connectors off. I used my 12 volt power supply to put electrons along the two white wires. Sure enough the trim motor whirred into life and kept going until it had reached the end of travel, and then stopped. Worked in both directions, by reversing the two wires. Travel from stop to stop was only a few seconds, but I understand you can tweak the Dynon to change the speed until full travel takes 25-30 seconds.

Picture 3 shows the tail and rudder in place. I joined tail fin and rudder on the bench, as it is easier to slot the washers into place with the unit horizontal. There's no interference between rudder, stabilitor, and trimmer with full travel. However, I did hear a scratching sound and noticed I had taken some paint off at the top of the rudder. Needs investigation and fix.
