Brian and I spent a couple hours dimpling the ribs and spars. We were almost ready to start priming the parts until I botched up a dimple on the main spar. The dimple die punched through the side of the drilled hole. The resultant hole was oval and had a couple of cracks. That took the wind out of our sails for the afternoon.
Yesterday we had contacted an EAA technical couselor to discuss his role in our build process. What a timely call. Today we contacted him to ask how to recover from the mistake. He was kind enough to come right over and explain how to correct the mistake without throwing away the entire spar. The fix is to drill out the hole until the cracks are gone, then drill and dimple two new holes, one on either side of the original hole.
