Brief Description: Getting to the end of the empennage
I'm nearing the end of this section. With only a few steps left (just need to install the top skin), I have to say this section has by far, been the longest one. This gives me time to reflect on my build so far. My wings are supposed to be here the first week in September and I'll get going on those. My hope is to build the wings and fuselage by this time next year. Very doable.
I'd like to be able to order my engine next summer. I'm considering using an engine other than the Rotax. Everything about Rotax is expensive, including the parts. I like the Jabiru 2200 for it's dirt simple design and durability, but it only has 85hp and a 15A alternator, which won't power much. I really need 30-40A for the panel, lights and safety margin. Which leaves me with UL260is, which costs even more than the Rotax, or a Viking HF-110, which is over half the cost of a rotax (including FWF). Issues with Viking are the owner, which who has a poor reputation with his previous ventures, a heavier engine by about 30 pounds and potential delays on delivery (this has been a common complaint by previous customers). I'll keep my eyes and options open and intend to buy next July.
