Brief Description:  Glass panel and steam gauges

Today was a milestone - got my first RV ride and in an RV-10. David McNeil, a fellow member of EAA #228 (FFZ) was kind enough to invite me for the breakfast flight to the cool country (Payson AZ - PAN).

He has a beautiful plane, white and maroon with a very sophisticated Chelton EFIS and EIS, and a backup Grand Rapids Sport EFIS. No steam guages. IO-540 and C/S Hartzell.

Being over 6'2" tall and 245 lbs, I was looking forward to the extra elbow room anticipated in the roomier RV-10. And with that IO-540, I anticipated a real climb rate to wow. (Compared to my experience in Warrior II.)

Very impressive and a great learning experience - THANKS DAVID. It helped me understand some issues and make a decision or two.

First, I will definitely put some steam gauges on the panel. As much as the glass panel incorporates in the display, it will take some time to become oriented. As a low time pilot, I don't need to get distracted with too much new technology, no matter how good it eventually becomes to the trained mind. Second, the larger the display the better - in fact, too small is very distracting and requires a lot of focus - eyes inside. Third, the glass panel integration of radio, moving map, and all the rest is fantastic. An overwhelming experience, especially when David said, "you've got the plane."
