Brief Description: Engine Research
|
|
In order to move forward, I need to place an order for the Finsihing Kit. That order is entirely dependent on the choice of engine - make/model/equipment.
To avoid getting the cart before the horse, I researched the choices that were available through Vans (Certificated vs Experimental) and IO-320 vs IO-360. Then on a related note, which prop to install, C/S or FP. Having no experience with Constant Speed, that was largely a guess and the cost difference did not seem to fit my goals for the plane.
After numerous conversations with EEA #228 members, and an enchange of emails with Vans, I decided to take a little of this and a little of that. Specifically, go with Fixed Pitch and bias towards a cruise pitch (if that is possible) but the more powerful IO-360 to get a little better performance for the take-off phase of flight.
That seems to fit my intended mission profile - short to moderate cross-country, in AZ where we have hot, high airfields. In addition, I've seen the ragged performance of a Piper Warrior II with my skinny little 250 lbs and a flight instructor, flying from Phoenix in the summer. Bigger engine seems reasonable.
