So, I received the new o-rings today and attempted to install them and the same thing happened again; damage to the o-rings. The only solution I can think of is to increase the countersink so I did that and it worked much better.
But here's the deal: the o-ring is not sealing the termanal shaft like it did on the original assembly, its only sealing the plastic washers. I think I will probably have to seal this with tank sealant to prevent leakage.
